༒ Empty River ༒

...Death does more than just hover above this land; it flows in its veins — rivers, merges into lakes and falls into the sea. Rivers here do not stay empty for long: ‘An empty river flows its course, / A truly empty river. / Yesterday they pulled the miller out, Now it’s an empty river.’

In this version of Rusalka the miller drowns first. There are windmills — crosses in the air. Then there are watermills — wheels in the water. Both of these grind space‑time into the bread of new life. What’s more, the first line brings Derzhavin to mind: ‘The river of time in its swift current / Carries away all human deeds / And sinks into oblivion...’ Sumarokov expresses the same idea only in other words; words closer to runes.
